About channel Rai Südtirol

Rai Südtirol is the German-language structure of the Rai branch in Bolzano, responsible for broadcasting television and radio programs throughout Trentino-Alto Adige.

The structure was born as Rai Sender Bozen (Bolzano broadcaster) on 7 February 1966 to produce German-language television programs dedicated to the province of Bolzano (German-speaking radio broadcasts started as early as 1960). These broadcasts are recorded at the Teatro Cristallo in Bolzano and broadcast on the Secondo Programma at 20.

In this period the provincial autonomy is still far from being achieved; South Tyrol is affected by the attacks of secessionist terrorist groups. In such a climate, the concession by the Italian government of a program in German, when other requests are not satisfied, is seen by South Tyrolean politics as the imposition of a pro-government instrument of control.[citation needed] One one of the reasons for the establishment of the channel is also to push towards the cessation of attempts to receive Austrian and German-speaking television programs in general, an option invoked by the SVP. Therefore, on the occasion of the launch of the programs, the president of the Provincial Council of Bolzano and father of provincial autonomy Silvius Magnago, in open controversy with the choice, refused to leave a message on the German-speaking RAI; the bishop of Bolzano-Bressanone, Msgr. Joseph Gargitter.

With the acquisition of provincial autonomy, the Rai Sender Bozen becomes a fundamental tool for strengthening autonomy in South Tyrol.

With the birth of the third television network (Rai 3), in 1979 a "bis network" was born, i.e. a fourth channel that repeats Rai 3 when the Sender Bozen is not broadcasting, to allow the diffusion of the local German program without obscuring the Italian national one. Also with regard to the radio program, the facility broadcasts on a dedicated frequency, which repeats Rai Radio 3 during breaks.

Since 2013, the structure has officially taken on the new name of Rai Südtirol and the number of hours of the entire television programming has been increased.

The television schedule is generalist; the start time of broadcasts on Rai 3 Südtirol varies daily and is established regularly over a long period. It never broadcasts between 19:00 and 20:00, when the national (TG3), regional (TGR) and provincial news in Ladin (TRaiL) are broadcast in Italian. Broadcasts end at 10.30 pm every day, except Saturdays, which is also the day of the week with the most hours of broadcasting (4 hours). Some programs are produced in both German and Italian (some also in Ladin), but on this network they are broadcast exclusively in German. As far as information is concerned, the structure guarantees two editions of the Tagesschau: the first at 8 pm and the second at 10.10 pm (Tagesschau 10 nach 10).

The regional teletext of South Tyrol covers only the autonomous province of Bolzano specifically to adequately serve the German linguistic group. Teletext in German starts from page 500 and includes radio and television programming, the weather, snow and pollen reports as well as Rai service information. The regional teletext of South Tyrol is also available on the internet.

Rai Südtirol is inserted both within the circuit of regional television "Circom Regional" and in the broader one of the EBU (Eurovision) being part of Rai. Among the most important co-productions is the creation of the cross-border Central European magazine Alpen Donau Adria (also produced in Italian under the name Alpe Adria) together with the public television stations of Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, Germany (Bavaria), Austria and Switzerland, as well as Italy . Another relevant co-production was the Grand Prix der Volksmusik, broadcast from 1986 to 2010 on Eurovision in the German-speaking countries. Rai Südtirol also collaborates with the public televisions of Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and also with the Rai structures appointed to serve the other linguistic minorities: Slovenian (Rai Friuli-Venezia Giulia) and French (Rai Vd'A).

The Sender Bozen is in competition with the other public televisions of Austria, Germany and Switzerland (whose reception is guaranteed by the Radiotelevisione Azienda Speciale - RAS). As far as the province is concerned, a small private broadcaster operates in the Burgraviato (tv3 - Sender Meran) which until recently broadcast throughout the provincial territory, but did not produce newscasts. Recently, an all-news broadcaster in German was born, Südtirol Digital Fernsehen (SDF), a subsidiary of the Italian-speaking Video 33, which broadcasts throughout South Tyrol.

The Rai Südtirol radio channel is, like its television counterpart, of the generalist type. It broadcasts daily from 6:00 (7:00 on Sundays) to 22:00. The schedule offers numerous news bulletins, with two main editions at 12:00 (10 minutes) and 19:30 (15 minutes). Programming is interrupted in certain time slots to allow the broadcasting of programs produced in the other two regional languages: from 2.05 pm to 3.30 pm the programs in Italian are shown, produced in collaboration with the Trento office, while in the 13:30-14:05 and 19:00-19:30 broadcasts in Ladin language. The radio signal of Rai Südtirol is also broadcast in the nearby province of Trento and in the historic Ladin municipalities of Cortina d'Ampezzo, Livinallongo del Col di Lana and Colle S. Lucia to allow reception of the Ladin programme. Even the radio does not broadcast commercials. After 10.00 pm, when broadcasts stop, the network offers the simulcast of Rai Radio 3 until 6.

The radio program encounters pitfalls from other strong local private broadcasters, first of all "Südtirol 1", also listened to by many people of the Italian language group and preferred by the young audience (together with the Austrian public "Ö3" dedicated to pop and modern music) and which provides information thanks to the "Südtirol Journal" circuit, which includes eight other local radio stations, with a highly competitive and dynamic service.

On the German section of the website of the Rai headquarters in Bolzano, it is possible to listen to some of the radio and television programs broadcast, as well as listen to the radio in live streaming.

The Bolzano office is placed (but with wide managerial autonomy) under the aegis of the Regional Journalistic Head, which appoints its managers. The director of the entire Rai branch in Bolzano is Vittorio Longati. Markus Perwanger is responsible for the German-language programming structure, while the editorial team is headed by Wolfgang Mayr.
