About channel Rai Storia

Rai Storia, formerly known as Rai Edu 2, is an Italian thematic free television channel published by Rai and edited by Rai Cultura.

Initially dedicated to scientific and cultural dissemination, since 2 February 2009 he has mainly dealt with history.

Rai Storia is "a mirror of our country" which reflects our past, a powerful audiovisual memory presented and analyzed with a strong vocation for comparison with the present. Thanks to some of its specificities (use of the assets of the Rai showcases, updating them, the possibility of experimenting with multiple television languages applied to historical dissemination, chronological punctuality and strong attention to anniversaries and recurrences), it aims to reach very large and heterogeneous audiences in terms of age, gender and level of education.

Among the programs with the highest ratings ever for the channel, it is worth mentioning the documentary film «Ei fu. Life, conquests and defeats of Napoleon Bonaparte», produced by Rai Cultura, conducted by Alessandro Barbero and written by him together with Davide Savelli and directed by Graziano Conversano, which retraced the life - from childhood to the end of his days - of the French general 200 years after his death. The broadcast, which aired in the early evening of May 5, 2021, totaled 260,000 viewers and a share of 1%.

Rai Storia was born on 2 February 2009 as an independent television network to replace the Rai Edu 2 program which was broadcast precisely on Rai Due.

On 18 May 2010, the channel underwent a graphic restyling which also affected the logo and that of the other public service channels. Again in 2010, some still sporadic broadcasts began to be broadcast on Rai Storia in the 16:9 panoramic format, which accompany both commercial and television promos, which started on the morning of 1 November 2009.

Since March 2012 the channel has been broadcasting only in 16:9, if the material is in native 4:3 it is displayed in pillarbox and in the same month it renews the bumpers.

In November 2014, the channel renews the bumpers.

Since 4 January 2017, the channel has started broadcasting in high definition on the Tivùsat satellite platform.

On 10 April 2017, Rai Storia renews its logo, graphics and colors, going from light yellow to dark green.

From 20 October 2021, the standard definition version on digital terrestrial switches to MPEG-4 encoding, remaining visible only on HD devices.

On December 14, 2021, following a reorganization of frequencies, the SD version was eliminated from the satellite, remaining available only in HD. Following this, the channel becomes visible in the clear.

On 18 October 2020, various rumors began to circulate on the web regarding a probable closure of the channel, as illustrated in the reorganization plan of CEO Fabrizio Salini presented to the Rai board of directors, which would provide for the unification of Rai Storia into Rai 5. Although there was no official announcement, this, similarly to the case of Rai Movie and Rai Premium, aroused various controversies, following which a petition was born on Change.org which collected more than 51,000 signatures. Subsequently, Salini himself revealed that he had only hypothesized everything and therefore did not want to close or merge the channel, indeed stating that he wanted to improve it.

Rai Storia is available on digital terrestrial in RAI Mux A. It is also available via satellite on Hot Bird 8, Tivùsat, Sky Italia and via web on RaiPlay.

Rai Storia broadcasts every day, 24 hours a day and the schedule is mainly made up of programs concerning history, together with programs on philosophy, literature and art.
