About channel Rai 5

Rai 5 is an Italian semi-generalist television channel, published by Rai and managed by the Rai Cultura structure.

It deals with culture with particular attention to the world of art, proposing documentaries, reports and entertainment (music, dance and theatre). It is available in the areas covered by the RAI Mux B multiplex.

Since 2017, the director of Rai 5 has been Piero Corsini.

In the first months of 2009, after the birth of Rai 4, Rai began to set up its fifth generalist channel. Rumors continue about the various targets that Rai 5 will take on; the director of Rai 4 Carlo Freccero announces that if he becomes director of the new channel he will direct it towards the same target as Rai Storia. Subsequently, discussions were held to shape the channel towards the entertainment and comedy programs that have made the history of Rai in order to support the programming of the RaiSat Extra satellite channel; then there is discussion to be able to influence the channel's target towards cinema by replacing RaiSat Cinema.

Towards mid-2010, on the eve of the renewal of the offer, Rai announces that the channel's target will be oriented towards culture. After the birth of the management of the channel, which took place on 27 April 2010, the Northern League began to request its management, to want to establish the production center in Milan and to want to make it the channel of Expo 2015. Subsequently the president of Rai, Paolo Garimberti , declares that Rai 5 will indeed be the channel of Expo 2015, but that it will not become the channel of the North.

Before the launch of the channel, a commercial was aired on Rai's generalist networks, underlining the new vision of the world with the new Rai 5 channel.

The channel was therefore born on 26 November 2010 in conjunction with the switch off in Lombardy, from the ashes of Rai Extra. When the channel was born, the Rai 5 logo alternated with that of Rai Extra in order to highlight the transition. The first program broadcast on the new channel is Africa Benedetta, with Benedetta Mazzini.

On December 7, 2010, the premiere of the Teatro alla Scala will be broadcast live with Richard Wagner's opera The Valkyrie[7]. In 2011 the experience was repeated with the live broadcast of Mozart's Don Giovanni which obtained one of the best audience results on the network.

On 10 May 2011, the semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2011, a singing event in which Italy had the right to vote, was broadcast, with commentary by Raffaella Carrà. This part of the event will also be broadcast on Rai 5 in 2012 and 2013, with commentary by Federica Gentile of Radio 2. The 2013 semi-final reaches a considerable audience: 150,000 spectators.

On 23 August 2011, the channel sees the return of the Late Show with David Letterman (also called the David Letterman Show), previously broadcast on Sky Uno and RaiSat Extra, which will continue to air until its end.

Rai 5 also broadcasts some short news bulletins produced by the editorial staff of Rai News.

On 16 August 2013, the Palio di Siena was broadcast for the first time.

On 19 September 2013, the board of directors of Rai, following the transfer of Ferrario to the Ligurian headquarters of Rai, appointed Pasquale D'Alessandro as director of Rai 5 for the second time, who had left the position for two years first to direct Rai 2. After two and a half months, D'Alessandro will present the new schedule of the channel, focusing it, at the behest of the Rai management, towards culture and theater, especially in the programming of the early evening which opens every evening at 20: 45 with an episode of Passepartout.

On January 20, 2014, the Out of Hours group created the Scaramouche scaramouche container dedicated to auteur cinema, with the proposal of short films, documentaries, rushes and archive materials.

From 12 June 2014, the channel became part of Rai Cultura, previously known as Rai Educational, directed by Silvia Calandrelli, joining Rai Storia and Rai Scuola.

Since 19 September 2016, it has also been broadcasting in high definition on the Tivùsat satellite platform. With the broadcast change that took place in the same period, the channel began broadcasting historical art and cultural programs on an aspect ratio of 4:3 in 16:9 pillarbox, together with the other Rai channels.

On 10 April 2017, Rai 5 changed its logo, graphics and colors, going from orange to olive green.

On November 22, 2017, Piero Corsini was appointed new director of the channel.

From 20 October 2021, the standard definition version on digital terrestrial switches to MPEG-4 encoding, remaining visible only on HD devices.

On December 14, 2021, following a reorganization of frequencies, the SD version from Tivùsat was eliminated, remaining available only in HD.

The programs are aimed at an attentive and demanding public and concern various aspects of culture: art, entertainment, travel, music and dance, fashion and costume, opera and theatre, design and new technologies, documentaries and auteur films.

The live broadcast of La traviata, on December 7, 2013, obtained an average of 3.26% equal to 650,000 spectators and marks the network's audience record.
