Rhoda Scott Lady Quartet - Live at Moods | Qwest TV

“The Barefoot Lady,” a figurehead of the Hammond organ, graces the stage here at the Moods Club in Zurich, accompanied by her two imposing Leslie loud speakers and the best French jazz musicians of the moment. Gathered under the name of “Rhoda Scott Lady Quartet” for a special anniversary tour, they work a repertoire that mixes compositions and covers (Charles Trenet, Miles Davis).

With Julie Saury on drums, Sophie Alour and Lisa Cat-Berro on tenor and alto saxophone respectively, Rhoda Scott certainly knows how to surround herself and it’s a real pleasure to see a group composed entirely by women – the inverse being, on the contrary, very common.

At the age of 8, Rhoda Scott discovered the organ in church. Once a musician in her own right, she was quickly noticed by Count Basie, who invited her to play with his orchestra in residence at a Harlem club. Eddie Barclay, never far away and piqued by curiosity, invited her to Paris to work with his cabaret, too. Since then, she has established herself as an ambassador for the instrument. After falling in love with France, she got married there and created her famous female quartet in 2004 at the Jazz à Vienne Festival, with which she released two albums, the last one highlighted as part of this performance: We free Queens (2017).
